Further post-graduate training allows development of theoretical knowledge of sports nutrition as well as opportunities to gain practical experience in the application of sports nutrition for Sports Dietitians.

These courses will provide some of the competencies required for Sports Dietitians to be registered on the Sports and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr)

PgCert / Msc in Sport and Exercise Nutrition at Coventry University

The PgCert in Sports and Exercise Nutrition provides students with the opportunity to acquire an evidence based approach to the understanding and application of the science of nutrition in order to promote exercise and sport performance.  The course has been designed with the input of SDUK (Sports Dietitians UK) and comprises of three masters level modules.  The course has been designed to cater for the needs of the working dietitian  / nutritionist  as taught sessions occur part time, over 4 weekends (based in Coventry), with the remaining content being delivered on-line. Following successful completion of the PgCert students are eligible to continue their studies and enrol on a master’s programme* (to achieve a MSc Sports & Exercise Nutrition).  

* Students can progress to the masters course immediately following the successful completion of the PgCErt or alternatively have a break in studies and return to the course subject to course and university regulations.

Coventry University

The PgCert in Sports and Exercise Nutrition is a programme of study which aims to enable students to develop an evidence based approach to understanding the science of sports nutrition and the application of sport and exercise nutrition for groups and individuals.

There is growing recognition that appropriate nutrition is essential for performance and recovery in sport. A growing number of athletes at all levels of achievement require support from appropriately trained professionals in this field and the Sports and Exercise Nutrition PgCert will give you the skills needed to deliver this support.

Reasons to choose Sports and Exercise Nutrition PgCert (part-time course)

  • The course is accredited by Sports Dietitians UK. During the course students will have the opportunity to generate evidence for a number of competencies as outlined in the sports and exercise nutrition register (SENr).
  • SENr was launched in 2006. The SENr is a competency based register of Sport and Exercise Nutritionists. The register is designed to enable employers, clients and members of the public to identify and contact registered Sport and Exercise Nutritionists. The SENr is a joint collaboration between the British Dietetic Association, the British Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences and The Nutrition Society.

Future prospects

  • Further study with the MSc in Sports and Exercise Nutrition.
  • Work with individuals or groups to improve performance by appropriate dietary advice.

Entry requirements

  1. An honours degree in dietetics or human nutrition. Modules of study must include physiology. Students will normally have achieved a 2:2 or above.
  2. An honours degree in sports science - modules of study must include human nutrition at level 3. Students will normally have achieved a 2:2 or above

Applicants must be able to demonstrate interest, enthusiasm and continuous professional development - ideally in the field of sports nutrition.
